Hybrid Puppies
Mixed breeds usually start with unplanned matings between purebred dogs. Most of these breedings are to produce positive traits such as non-shedding and hypo-allergenic qualities. These dogs come in many colors, sizes and weights. They are intelligent, loyal and alert. They make great companion dogs and most are easy to train, though some do need firm handling. They are usually good with children. Grooming needs will vary depending on the breed mix. These dogs can weigh from 7 to 77 lbs. and stand 9-21" at the shoulders. Wolf + Dog = ?
Wolf Dogs - These Wolf "hybrids" are a cross between a Wolf and a domestic dog. However, in 1992, scientists reclassified dogs and Wolves as the same species making the term "hybrid" obsolete. Wolf content, the number of generations removed from a pure Wolf and the type of dog used in each cross must be considered when defining a Wolfdog. Because of random genetics inherited from both the dog and the Wolf, the looks and/or behavior can vary.
Today, four breeds of dog exist that utilized a significant amount of wolf-dog hybridization in their creation. All of the breeds were the result of intentional crosses with German Shepherd Dogs, and have distinguishing characteristics of appearance that may reflect the subspecies of wolf that contributed to their foundation stock. The intention in creating the breeds varied; ranging from the desire for a recognizable companion wolfdog to military working dogs. The eldest breed, the Saarlooswolfhond, traces its origins to the efforts of a Dutch breeder in 1921. This first attempt at sustained wolfdog crossing was solely to improve Shepherd stock and prevent canine distemper. Though this effort failed, today the FCI and the Dutch Kennel Club both recognize the breed. In the 1950's, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and the Kunming Dog were created, the latter as a working military dog. The most recent variety of wolf-dog hybrid, the American Tundra Shepherd, has yet to receive official recognition from any governing body and is still undergoing major development.
